A lady named Safina Namukwaya, who is 70 years old and lives in Masaka district, had two babies on Wednesday. She had a boy and a girl by cesarean delivery. The twins weighed 2 kilograms each, and they were born at 34 weeks.

The Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre shared the news on their Facebook page, saying, “We did something amazing – we helped Africa’s oldest mom, 70, have twins!”

The hospital explained that Namukwaya got pregnant through a process called In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). In IVF, eggs are taken from the ovaries, fertilized with sperm in a lab, and then put in the uterus, where babies grow.

Usually, women stop having babies between 45 and 55 due to menopause. But with medical progress, it’s now possible for them to give birth later.

Namukwaya wanted children because people made fun of her for not having any. She had her first child, a girl, in 2020.

In an interview with the Daily Monitor newspaper, Namukwaya shared that her recent pregnancy was hard because her partner left her when he found out she was having twins. She said, “Men don’t like to hear about more than one child. Since I came to the hospital, he hasn’t visited.”

The hospital took care of her until she gave birth. A doctor explained, “We decided to do surgery because she couldn’t handle the weight of two babies at her age.”

Both the mother and the twins are healthy.
