Uganda has kicked off Francophonie Month, a nationwide celebration of the French language and Francophone culture, featuring a variety of cultural and educational events throughout March. The festivities, spearheaded by the Embassy of France in Uganda in collaboration with key partners, aim to promote cultural exchange and highlight the increasing significance of French in Uganda.
The official launch took place at Alliance Française Kampala (AFK), setting the stage for a vibrant lineup of activities designed to engage students, educators, and the wider community.
French as a Global Language
During the launch event, Cyril Maman, Head of Cooperation and Cultural Affairs at the French Embassy, emphasized the global importance of the French language, which is spoken by over 320 million people across five continents.
“Francophonie is more than just about France. It represents a global community of French speakers. Learning French opens doors to new opportunities, both in education and the job market,” he noted.
Maman highlighted the growing economic and professional advantages of learning French in Uganda, especially in light of regional economic integration and international trade.
“In a world where communication is key, mastering French can connect Ugandans to numerous business and career opportunities, particularly in Francophone countries,” he added.
A Month of Cultural Activities
The Francophonie Month will feature a series of events across Uganda, engaging students, professionals, and the general public in various ways. The activities include:
- March 1: Apéro Francophone – A social gathering at AFK to foster connections among French speakers.
- March 7: Njogera Française Interschool Competitions – Recognizing outstanding students and teachers of the French language.
- March 8-11: School-Based Entertainment Events – Organized by the Association of Teachers of French in Uganda (APFO) to promote French culture.
- March 15: Job and Study Fair – Showcasing academic and career opportunities for French learners.
- March 22: Francophone Festival at the International French School in Kampala, featuring food, fashion, and cultural exhibitions.
- March 27: Francophonie Concert at Alliance Française Kampala, serving as the grand finale of the celebrations.
All events are free and open to the public, offering an inclusive platform for people to engage with Francophone culture.
Empowering Uganda’s French Learners
Agatha Tumwine, President of APFO, described March as a pivotal month for French learners and educators in Uganda. She stressed the significance of these events in creating opportunities for students to practice and engage with the language in real-life settings.
“Learning a foreign language in an English-speaking country like Uganda can be challenging. However, Francophonie Month provides an interactive platform where students can improve their French through conversations, performances, and competitions,” she explained.
With over 18 planned events, the celebrations aim to enhance linguistic skills, foster intercultural understanding, and strengthen the presence of French in Uganda’s education system.
As Uganda continues to embrace multilingualism, Francophonie Month serves as a bridge to new opportunities—from international education prospects to business and diplomatic engagements with French-speaking nations.
