The return of remains of Keith Muhakanizi, a former Secretary to the Treasury has been pushed to an unknown date as the family works on fulfilling the requirements required by authorities in Milan, Italy.

Earlier, the government announced Muhakanizi’s body will be repatriated today (Wednesday).

At the time of his passing last week, Muhakanizi was receiving treatment at a hospital in Milan.

He died serving as Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Office of the Prime Minister.

At the age of 64, Muhakanizi succumbed to cancer which he has battled for close to 15 years.

Family members and the government had said they expect the body to arrive at Entebbe International Airport on Wednesday afternoon.

And burial had been slated for Saturday in Lyantonde.

However, there has been change of program as the return of the deceased depends upon the local law and practices in Milan.

A top government official said, the hospital where Muhakanizi died is on an island in Milan and the shipment of the casket requires clearance to the mainland which has been delayed.

“We are yet to confirm when the body will be cleared and eventually repatriated,” the official said.

Upon return, a state ceremony will be held at Kololo ceremonial grounds.

President Museveni last week directed Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to organize an official burial in recognition of Muhakanizi’s great contribution to the country.

“Muhakanizi was a celebrated economist and permanent secretary who made a significant contribution to the development of our country by championing robust public sector reforms and offering sound advice,” said Nabbanja.

After the state ceremony, Muhakanizi’s body will be taken to Kabula in Lyantonde district for a church service and burial.
